Im Tunka Tal sind viele Buddhisten. Es gehört schon zur autonomen Republik Buryatien, wo der Buddhismus stark ist. Im Westen des Baikal dagegen spielt er eine kleinere Rolle, dafür der Schamanismus eine größere.
